USAID & Implementing Partners Overview

The Emerging Markets Development Advisers Program (EMDAP) is a cooperative effort between the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Institute of International Education (IIE) and is now also available to USAID Missions and their partners under the Volunteers for Economic Growth Alliance (VEGA).

For over ten years, some 170 students and recent graduates from over 70 universities across the United States have contributed to the development of business solutions in 45 USAID-identified emerging market countries. At the same time EMDAP Advisers gain valuable work experience in those countries and write case studies about their experiences that are taught in business schools worldwide. For a quick glance at EMDAP-impacted countries and participating U.S. universities, see Where are Advisers Assigned?.

EMDAP Advisers use their knowledge of business management practices to identify business solutions in diverse situations and support a scope of work for a position in a local business/business-serving organization. They help build capacity and create mechanisms to sustain their effort after the end of their assignment. In this way, USAID’s goal of broad-based, sustainable economic growth is realized. Developing country host organizations that have benefited from an EMDAP Adviser in recent times include both big and small, based in the capital city or in a outlying town.

EMDAP Advisers work in capacities such as:

  • Financial planning and cost control
  • Loan portfolio tracking and analysis
  • Production efficiency, inventory systems and quality control
  • Marketing, sales, and import/export
  • Human resource development/management
  • Information systems and database management
  • Strategy development/implementation
  • Property development
  • Policy analysis and coordination
  • Development of microfinance manuals and BDS implementation
  • Work assignments are identified in collaboration with each cooperating USAID mission and/or implementing partner. Designated mission officers generally serve as mission contacts and participate in identifying Advisers by matching candidate credentials with the requirements of the identified assignments.

To begin the process of sponsoring an EMDAP Adviser, we invite you to complete a Scope of Work. If you have any questions about the program, please feel free to contact us at any time. We look forward to working with you in the future and to continue the longstanding relation between EMDAP, USAID and its implementing partners.
